Shameless is a Channel 4 comedy drama series looking at life with a bunch of losers and boozers on a fictional and deprived council estate called Chatsworth set on the outskirts of Manchester. Seen as a reflection of “broken Britain” Shameless offers an alternative look into British life, with the low life angle played up for comic effect.
The series which began back in 2004, centred around the Gallagher family and their neighbours and the other larger than life characters in the neighbourhood. Frank Gallagher the head of the family is an alcoholic father of six and in the first few series, the plot mainly centred around the lives and loves of him and his children.

Over the years, new characters have been introduced and the Gallagher family have lost their earlier central role to the drama as many cast members have left the show.  In later series the Maguire family, introduced as new neighbours have become more central along with some of the minor roles including the Karib family the local shop keepers.

Shameless has won awards, winning best drama series in 2005 at the British Academy television Awards and also beat Coronation street in the Best continuing drama category in 2007  in the Royal Television Awards Society North West.

Shameless has been remade for American TV by HBO.
Shameless with its local British character and gritty setting has become popular around the world across Europe and Australia. If you like your comedy delivered with a heavy dose of Northern working class humour you will like it. When compared to the sickly sweet and glossy offerings of some of the other family sitcoms on TV you will find Shameless a refreshing change.  This programme is as far away from the US sitcoms such as Sex In The City and Two Broke Girls as you can possibly get!
