Youngers
Youngers
Youngers on Channel 4 is a new teen comedy drama that follows the attempts of a group of South London teenagers to break into the urban music business. Yemi and Jay are school friends and the drama begins on the day of the GCSE results when the boys decide to enter a local music contest. Yemi enlists Davinia into the group as a singer who he has a secret crush on although she is more interested in Jay and they recruit another school friend Ash as manager. On the day of the first competion, the receptionist simply lists their act dismissively as “youngers” and the name just sticks.
Youngers on Channel 4 follows the progress of the group as they deal with leaving school and perform as a music group. The drama focuses on the relationships and love triangle between Yemi Jay and Davinia, their attempts to promote the Youngers as a band and get signed to a record label.
This teen drama was inspired by the true life stories of urban rap artists such as Tiny Tempeh and Dizzee Rascal and the music used on the series by the Youngers was written by a contemporary performer known as Skitz Beats.
Youngers was filmed in Peckham and strikes a very believable tone. The group can all sing dance and rap and the language and flavour of the series is entertaining as well as authentic. The London urban music scene is a great backdrop for the personal stories and romance between the friends.
Youngers on channel 4 first aired in May 2013 and has completed one season of eight episodes. Catch up with all episodes on youngers via youriplayer.co.uk .
