What's the Big Idea
What’s the Big Idea is a CBeebies programme that aims to get pre school age children thinking! This first ever philosophy TV programme aged at young children follows Hugo as he asks a big question and then goes on an adventure to find the answer. These questions can be anything and Hugo’s quest for information can take him through the magical landscape and sometimes even in to outer space.
The philosophical questions suit the age group and cover topics such as
. What is the difference between thinking about something and dreaming, What is sadness, Is it ok to ever get angry, and similar.
The aim of What’s The Big Idea is to encourage creative and critical thinking skills in young children and it helps them think about others in a collaborative way. Studies have shown that philosophical enquiry helps children develop and gain confidence and many primary schools are introducing a philosophical element into their timetable.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to watch What’s The Big Idea on CBeebies with their preschoolers so that they can discuss the issues highlighted on the show with their children. Hugo provides an easy medium for getting children to think and express themselves about subjects that are part of everyone’s life but rarely thought about.
