Vicious is an ITV sitcom that has divided critical opinion and it seems like marmite; you will either love or hate this show. There appears to be no middle ground and no neutral opinions!

The series revolves around Freddie and Stuart, two gay men who have lived together in Covent Garden for the last 50 years. Camp theatrical and bitchy, the two, played by Derek Jacobi and Sir Ian McKellen, the vicious old queens of the title are joined by their friend Violet played by Frances De La Tour and a cast of friends and larger than life characters. Although the couple’s working days are over the pair still manage to have fun and still dream about a big break. In the meantime they entertain their friends, reminisce about past showbiz triumphs, look after their dog and lust after the fit new neighbour Ash played by Iwan Rheon. The dialogue is caustic and if you like plenty of camp comedy, you will enjoy this show.

 

Vicious on ITV has been criticised for its gay stereotyping and some viewers have felt offended by its portrayal, despite the fact that Sir Ian McKellen is actually gay himself. In addition, some viewers simply have not found it funny. However enough people have enjoyed the show enough for ITV to commission a new series and it has  been described as a lot of fun and a nostalgic romp with a 70s style flavour and some cuttingly funny dialogue.
