The Vampire Diaries on ITV is an American drama series based on the novels of L.J.Smith, which have been extremely popular in print format. This glossy supernatural drama follows the goings on in a small town in Virginia inhabited by supernatural beings. Central to the plot is a love triangle between the main character Elena Gilbert with two vampire brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore. The plot focuses on the evil past of the town, Elena’s mysterious and evil double Katarina Petrova and the Original Vampires – the worlds first vampires descended from Viking settlers to America in the 10th century.

Vampire fiction is hugely popular and this televised series of the Vampire Diaries has won Teen Choice awards in America as well as awards and nominations for the People’s Choice Awards – awarded for programmes based on viewing figures and popularity.
Now showing on ITV, the Vampire diaries first aired in 2010 and so far has run to four seasons. There is also a spin off show featuring the family of original vampires, titled The Originals.

The Vampire diaries follows the original books fairly closely although the series has added extra characters to the plot, so if you are familiar with the books expect some changes. If you do not know the books but like a supernatural romance drama featuring vampires, witches werewolves and the forces of evil in small town America, the Vampire Diaries will appeal to you.
