The Sheriffs Are Coming
The Sheriffs Are Coming
The Sheriffs Are Coming on BBC One is a documentary series that looks at the work of the High Court Enforcement Officers (previously known as sheriffs) as they carry out their daily work of trying to obtain money following High Court judgements. In this series the targets are employers, companies and trades people who owe members of the public money and typical cases include employers who have refused to pay redundancies, debts owed by car clamping firms and dodgy tradesmen who have left work unfinished then absconded with the payment.
The Sheriffs Are Coming on BBC One was first broadcast in 2012 and so far has run to two series. The sheriffs themselves may be likeable but are generally chunky looking guys you would not want to tangle with and although they are working towards the public good, there is something unsettling about this programme. It seems only a short step away from watching debt collectors and bailiffs remove property from members of the public, which may be not quite as entertaining.
The Sheriffs Are Coming alerts the public to the possibility of reclaiming lost money following court judgements and this is a point in its favour. The show itself is watchable and filmed in a fly on the wall format so it does give the viewer a taste of what happens when the sheriffs are called in. This series is cut and dried in that the targets have defrauded members of the public so we are left in no doubt that the sheriffs are the good guys.
