The Returned
The Returned on Channel 4 is French language supernatural drama series set in a remote Alpine village. The drama follows the story of what happens when dead people start reappearing in the town and take up their normal lives. These include Camille a teenage victim of a road traffic accident; Victor a young boy killed by burglars and Simon a bridegroom who committed suicide. If this wasn’t strange enough, mysterious events take place in and around the town making the local inhabitants even more fearful for their own lives.

The Returned features some unexpected and spookily eerie story lines. Old histories are revisited as the Returned and the town’s people are reunited. A grisly serial killer is one of the “returned” and the reappearance of some of long dead family members have equally serious repercussions for those who believed that their secrets died with the victims.
The Returned on Channel 4, called Les Revenants in the original French version has met with positive critical acclaim. Some reviewers have likened it to cult US drama Twin Peaks and this classy supernatural horror attracted wide viewing figures in France.
These days we have become accustomed to watching foreign language drama – all those Norwegian crime dramas - and this French series offers a new take on European drama. Filmed in the Haut Savoie region, the scenery is stunning and atmospheric and a major landmark the Barrage des Tignes is a dam, which features strongly throughout the story.
