The Return of Sherlock Holmes is a classic ITV series that was first broadcast in 1986. Starring Jeremy Brett in the title role and accompanied by Edward Hardwicke as Doctor Watson, this series carries on where it left off in the two earlier Sherlock Holmes TV series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The return of Sherlock Holmes ran for two series between 1986 and 1988. The series is based on the Arthur Conan Doyle novels of the same title and the full series of 13 titles is faithfully replicated by the episodes.
The series, as the book, opens with The Empty House, which is the story about Sherlock Holmes survival following a supposedly fatal accident after a struggle with his nemesis Moriaty. Apparently, Arthur Conan Doyle had intended to kill off his character but the books were so popular that public pressure made him bring Holmes back to life
Although this series is vintage, most Sherlock Holmes fans consider Jeremy Brett the most iconic Sherlock Holmes and in keeping with the flavour of the original books. In the Return of Sherlock Holmes series, Dr Watson is played by Edward Hardwicke who replaced David Burke in the role.
The atmospheric Victorian setting combined with the performances of the actors have stood the test of time and the format has been digitally remastered for modern broadcasting. Don’t be put off by the age of this series. If you have never seen it, this series is well worth watching and has a truly timeless appeal.
