The Hotel
The Hotel
The Hotel is a reality documentary series based around hotels and has run for three seasons so far. The first series was set in the Damson Dene Hotel in the Lake District and follows the fortunes of the staff from manager to chambermaid as well as the guests who arrive for holidays, breaks and events. Expect problems with drunken chefs, lost bookings and true life changing moments as guests visit the hotel for many different reasons.
The second and third series of The Hotel was set in The Grosvenor a hotel in Devon that has been described as a real life Fawlty Towers. There are certainly similarities. Both hotels are in Torquay and both experience problems caused by their manager. The drama focuses Mark Jenkins the owner manager as he manages to leave a trail of chaos behind him, as well as being charismatic and extremely popular with the guests.
Mark Jenkins lives in the hotel himself and aims to keep his hotel filled with happy holidaymakers and goes to any lengths to achieve this. He is helped by Alison the bookings manager and Christian the deputy manager who attempt to rein in some of his madder plans and cope with the stresses of running a hotel combined with the need to make a profit.
The team at the Grosvenor are natural TV stars and Channel 4 chose to return for a third series of the Hotel rather than look for a new hotel to follow. It is often pure comedy and this is largely due to the natural talents of Mark Jenkins who is likeable and engaging and a major part of the show’s appeal.
