The Hoarder Next Door
The Hoarder Next Door on Channel 4 sees psychotherapist Stelios Kiosses and a team of expert de-clutterers coming to the aid of a group of extreme hoarders in a bid to change and improve their lives and homes.
Extreme hoarding is a compulsive disorder about collecting things and being unable to throw anything away. It is fairly common and many of us have a touch of this condition but in extreme cases, it can be a real health risk. Sometimes hoarding becomes so extreme that the clutter becomes a dangerous health hazard caused by the decay and dirt, the risk of the precarious clutter mountains falling on the victim and in some cases a very real fire risk.

It may be grim but The Hoarder Next Door on Channel 4 makes for some interesting watching. After all a house full of rotting waste is a symbol for psychological breakdown and sadly this does makes for TV gold. As one wag noted the show is so embarrassing, even the skip lorry had its name pixelated.
We meet characters like Michelle a woman so obsessed with hoarding and rescuing animals that she kept the body of recently deceased bunny “Dumbledore” in a box.
Another show features Nigel a Porcelain hoarder who nine years ago lost his boyfriend and collecting partner Sid to cancer. When he said Sid’s name out loud, Nigel started crying, and then he couldn’t stop. This really should be the focus of the show because the hoarding is a symptom of a very real problem. v510tv
Hoarding appears to be more common in people with psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. These problems are often associated with alcohol dependence as well as paranoid, schizoid type, and avoidant traits.
The notion of hoarding being defined as a mental disorder did not begin until 2013 and it may well be that TV brought this to the public’s attention. The first TV show to show this was back in 1999 when John Peel told the story of Mr Trebus a hoarder in a documentary called A Life of Grime. The Hoarder Next Door on Channel 4 shows us that this groundbreaking earlier show was only the tip of an iceberg.
