Southcliffe
If you have ever wondered what it is like to live in a town when a maniac local gunman goes on the rampage, Southcliffe on Channel 4 provides a compelling and viewpoint as to what might happen. Southcliffe is a fictional small town in Kent, which is devastated by a shooting spree that takes place over just one day. Following the tragedy, the town struggle to come to terms with the sense of loss and the need to move on and there remains the unanswered question about what happened to the killer who was believed to have drowned on the Kent Marshes.
The story is told with the use of flashbacks that establish the events leading up to the shootings and the aftermath. Rory Kinnear plays a journalist who returns to the town to cover the story. Most of the violence is suggested rather than explicitly shown but it still makes for tense and uncomfortable viewing.
Southcliffe is a new channel 4 drama series starring some notable British actors including Sean Harris as the crazed killer Stephen Morton, Shirley Henderson as central character Claire Salter and Joe Dempsey and Eddie Marsan in supporting roles. This classy production was selected to be screened at the 2013 Toronto Film Festival and the response from critics was largely positive.
Southcliffe is a high quality drama series that seems very believable. We all remember ordinary towns like Hungerford and Dunblane now forever associated with violent gunmen and events like the Cumbrian shootings are sadly no longer uncommon. This series gives the viewer a glimpse of what it is like when someone you know goes wrong and creates a living nightmare for once loved friends and neighbours.
