Silk! Only the very best barristers take the silk and competion is fierce. Silk on BBC 1 is a courtroom drama series that follows the lives of a group of ambitious young barristers on the front line of criminal law.
Along the way loves, lives and professional ambition of the barristers come under the spotlight with plenty of Machiavellian scheming thrown in.
Martha Costello played by Maxine Peake is a 30 something defence lawyer who lives for her job and is passionate about the principle of justice. Innocent until proven guilty may be the foundation of our legal system but throws up a moral dilemma. How can you defend someone when you suspect the person you are defending so eloquently may be guilty? tby47tvt
Martha is ambitious and wants to become a QC – a senior barrister known as a Silk, which comes from the idea that when a barrister is made a QC he or she wears silk robes. Unfortunately, fellow barrister Clive Reader played by Rupert Penny Jones is also going for silk and is a skilful and charismatic courtroom adversary.
Silk on BBC1 was written by former barrister Pete Moffat who has based the drama on his own experiences at the bar. The show has faced some criticism, most controversially the easy acceptance of cocaine use and heavy drinking. However, there is more to this drama than excessive behaviour. The story lines interweave with the criminal cases and ethical dilemmas and pressure faced by barristers on a daily basis
