Room 101
Room 101 on BBC 1 is a comedy television panel show based on the radio series of the same name, where celebrities are invited to discuss their pet hates and persuade the host to consign them to a fate worse than death in Room 101.
The concept of Room 101 was introduced by George Orwell in the novel Nineteen Eighty Four. It is a torture chamber in the Ministry of Love in which the Party attempts to subject a prisoner to his or her own worst nightmare, fear or phobia.
The original Room 101 was named after a meeting room in Broadcasting House where Orwell would sit through tedious meetings. Interestingly the concept of Big Brother also came from the same novel. Perhaps Big Brother was the director of the BBC!
Room 101 on BBC 1 is now an eight-episode comedy game show where three contestants have to compete in persuading the host that their argument has the most merit. r042tv
The contestants usually are usually chosen from the media and are different every week. Guests have included Ricky Gervais, Stephen Fry, Boris Johnson and Ian Hislop (the only person to appear twice on the show in its original format). Famous things banned to Room 101 have included The French, The Welsh, The host and Room 101 itself.
Room 101 is currently hosted by Frank Skinner but previous hosts have included Nick Hancock and Paul Merton. Originally, Room 101 was broadcast on BBC Radio 5 where the host of the time Nick Hancock managed to successfully transfer the show onto national television.
