Rev
Rev is a sitcom about the vicar and his congregation in the parish of St Saviour in the Marshes in Hackney, East London. The Reverend Adam Smallbone played by Tom Hollander is an Anglican priest who has been placed in Hackney after working in a small rural community. Adam has real faith and is unable to turn people away from his care often with richly comic consequences.
Reverend Adam Smallbone moves between his faithful but dwindling congregation from his slowly disintegrating church to people on the streets of Hackney, including drug addicts and the homeless, to the demands of social climbers using the church to get their children into the best schools.
There is a cast of good characters including his ever-supporting wife played by Olivia Colman and his archdeacon Robert, a slightly Machiavellian character who puts pressure on Adam to increase both the congregation and church income.
Adam is also helped and hindered by his lay reader Nigel, played by Miles Jupp who seems to believe he should be in charge of the church. His congregation includes Adoha a woman with romantic intentions towards Adam and the clergy in general, and Colin an unemployed heavy drinker whose soul Adam is trying to rescue.
What makes this show different from other religious based comedies such as the Vicar of Dibley, is the placing of the vicar in the inner city rather than a rural parish. This allows the show to explore England as it is now rather than previous attempts, which have always relied on small local issues for their story lines. Rev has some great writing, stellar performances and provides some social commentary. Remarkably it manages to be genuinely funny too.
