Midsomer is an idyllic county in the south of England where peace and middle England prevails. Amazingly if you were to live in this fictional county, your days may be numbered because foul play and murder is never too far away. There are more murders in Midsomer than the Bronx and although the usual victims are respectable pillars of the community, the headcount is more like the fall out from a drug dealers turf war than a disagreement about local politics or the local vicar.
Midsomer Murders on ITV is a much-loved national institution. This detective drama series has been broadcast since 1997 and is still as popular as ever with the viewing public almost two decades on. It follows detective DCI John Barnaby played by Neil Gudgeon in the lead role as he attempts to solve the many murders that unaccountably take place in the county in idyllic village settings.

DCI John Barnaby replaced long running DCI Tom Barnaby played by John Nettles who retired from the series in 2010 and this change of casting was explained by device that the two detectives are cousins!
One of the great things about Midsomer murders on ITV is that it is great fun to watch. The stories and plot lines are complex and the total unbelievably of the drama only adds to the fun. There is a strong vein of humour running through the series which features some high camp performances by many of the guest actors and some dark comedic moments as people are despatched by various inventive methods. One woman was crushed to death by a giant cheese!

Midsomer Murders has been sold all over the world and has the distinction of being Britain’s most sold TV show worldwide. The uniquely English setting has struck a chord with worldwide viewers and has probably helped to promote the tourist industry due to the beautiful landscape and quaint Englishness of the series.
