Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
Law & Order Special Victims Unit – usually abbreviated to SVU, is a glossy American TV police show set in New York and revolves around solving sex crimes. It is a spin off from earlier series Law and Order but SVU focuses around the detectives of the fictional Special Victims Unit loosely based on the real life New York Police Department.
The team specialise in solving sex crimes and part of the show is based around the life of the victim. In many cases the victim is a vital part of the plot and this show does not only deal with murder but all types of sex crimes so it is not inevitable that any new characters end up dead at the end of each episode. There can be happy endings!
Law & Order SVU is an extremely popular series worldwide. In the UK, it is showing on Channel 5 but it is aired in most countries around the world. You can watch Law & Order Special Victims Unit via youriplayer.co.uk and catch up with the latest episodes.
Law & Order SVU first broadcast in 1999 and has run to 14 series so far. The featured crimes are often inspired by true-life events and turned into fiction and entertainment and although this gives a realistic edge to proceedings, it must be hard to watch if you are a victim of sex crime yourself and see your ordeal mirrored as entertainment. Dick Wolf, the series ‘ creator first used a sex crime in companion show Law & Order but felt he wanted to explore the psychology of sex crime more fully so created this spin off series.

Since the show’s 14-year history, there have been some changes to the cast. Olivia Benson played by Mariska Hargitay is a central character and was first a junior detective, becoming more senior as the series progressed. She was joined by Elliot Stabler, the senior detective played by Christopher Meloni and the two had on screen chemistry until he left the show at the end of the 12th season. However many of the cast have stuck with the show over the 14 seasons , sometimes leaving and returning in guest appearances.
