Inspector George Gently
Chief Inspector George Gently is a Police Inspector, an old-fashioned policeman, a man who is respected but has few friends. He has no place for police corruption and employs a single-minded pursuit of criminals with just his reasoning and slightly jaded view of man’s nature to deduce and solve crimes.

Inspector George Gently on BBC1 has already run to six seasons. This popular series first aired in 2008 and was set in 1964. The sixth series is now set in the late 1960s and sees the world of drugs and the Cold War making an impact into the world of the policeman.
Inspector George Gently on BBC1 stars Martin Shaw as the eponymous Chief Inspector. Assisting him with his work are Detective Sergeant John Bacchus played by Lee Ingelby and Simon Hubbard as PC Taylor manning the police station front desk. Inspector George Gently is based on the series of 46 books by Alan Hunter written about a fictional Inspector of Scotland Yard. However, there are differences between the novels and the series. The books were set in Norfolk whereas the setting for the TV series is in Northumberland and County Durham.
However, fans of the books will enjoy the series. The stories reflect the changing attitudes of the general public to the police force in the late 1960s. Where once the trusted familiar, local ‘Bobbies on the beat’ operated to uphold the law, police officers were now beginning to be seen as agents of the state.
