I Never Knew That About Britain
I Never Knew That About Britain, anchored by Paul Martin, investigates Britain’s surprising history. The series explores some of Britain’s eccentric stories and characters, from the past, revealing some of the social, scientific, technological, artistic, and political achievements of the British people.
One little known story recounts the last invasion of Britain in 1797 that happened in the town of Fishguard, Wales. In this, local woman Jemima Nicholas fended off the advances of Napoleon’s soldiers who were hoping to stir up an uprising in Britain.
The soldiers had intended to land at Bristol but had been blown off course by the wind and ended up in Wales where Jemima advanced on them single handedly with a pitchfork capturing 12 Napoleonic soldiers. Jemima then organised the local women of the town to line up on the cliffs in red shawls to discourage the remaining soldiers into believing the British Army had arrived to repel the invasion.
Paul Martin, familiar to many as the host of Flog It, is aided by fellow researchers Steve Mould and Suzannah Lipscomb in this new eight episode series featuring the amazing and sometimes bizarre history of Britain.
I Never Knew that About Britain is a half hour show made for ITV in a contemporary magazine format. It will feature tales from traffic lights to the humble toilet, and tell these little known unusual stories and the people connected to them.
