Horizon first aired in May 1964 and featured the work of the renowned engineer and mathematical inventor Buckminster Fuller, the designer of the early geodesic domes. The mission statement of that original Horizon episode was “to provide a platform from which some of the world's greatest scientists and philosophers can communicate their curiosity, observations and reflections, and infuse into our common knowledge their changing views of the universe.”
Not many TV programmes come with such a powerful mission statement as that and Horizon has tried to follow this brief ever since. The programme has featured many of the discoveries of the microcosmic and macrocosmic world we live in since then.
Horizon on BBC 2 followed man’s first flight to the moon and humankind’s exploration of the planet’s deepest seas. The series has also kept a close eye on health and the way we live featuring research on both man and the planet, as well as the issues relating to the Earth’s changing ecosphere.
With current health issues around diet and obesity often featured in the programme, Horizon is still firmly on the pulse of the nation’s current concerns. This influential TV series is essential viewing for anyone who wants an in depth and informed view of our modern lifestyles and technology and the problems as well as the triumphs which surround our world.
