Heston's Fantastical Food
Heston's Fantastical Food
Heston’s Fantastical Food is a Channel 4 food programme that sees Chef Heston Blumenthal creating huge scale fantastical recipes in order to serve giant versions of ordinary food to the public. We are not told the reason why and the whole show seems pointless but it can be quite spectacular.
The tasks have included The Pub In a Pie where Heston builds a whole pub out of pies and includes a pool table created from fish and tartar sauce using pickled eggs as pool balls, and complete with giant pork scractchings bar snacks. A Christmas special features a Christmas pudding big enough to stand in and Christmas decorations made from a pig's head.
If there is a problem with Channel 4’s Heston’s Fantastical Food it is that it seems so ludicrously pointless and wasteful. The Michelin starred chef is well known for his quirky take on classic recipes and theatrical presentation of food but many critics have not been impressed. The Daily Telegraph called the show “messy and repellent” and other reviews have been equally unfavourable.
Heston Blumenthal is a self taught celebrity chef. His restaurant The Fat Duck has been rated one of the best restaurants in the World and has three Michelin stars. His food credentials are impeccable and he does aim to bring fun into food
It does not quite work with Heston Fantastical Food, but seeing a pub built from pies, a giant 99 ice cream featuring a 5-metre flake, and a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory inspired sweetshop with giant sweets and similar, is not something you see every day so it may be worth a look.
