Have I Got News for You
Have I Got News for You
Have I Got News For You on BBC One is a long running satirical comedy panel game that first aired in 1990 and looks to continue well into the future. It is a national institution. Where else can we see politicians and people in the news taken down a peg and their motives questioned?
HIGNFY – as the show is usually abbreviated, covers the stories and the people making the news and has a reputation for making libellous comments about powerful institutions. The shows regulars cover their comments by using the expression “allegedly “and this has become a UK catchphrase.
Comedian Paul Merton and Private Eye editor Ian Hislop are the team captains who are joined each week by a guest politician, comedian or notable public figure. Angus Deayton was the permanent presenter between 1990 and 2002 but was fired from the show after revelations about his own private life became open to public ridicule. Since then, HIGNFY has been hosted by a new guest presenter each week and this has helped to keep the show fresh and varied.
Have I Got News for You is extremely witty and funny. It has sometimes been criticised for being too hard on guests who often cannot cope with the quick fire wit of the contestants. It also has a strong effect upon public opinion. It has been argued that current mayor of London, Boris Johnson would never have come to public attention without his regular appearances on Have I Got News For You. According to Merton and Hislop Boris Johnson was a buffoon who created entertaining TV coverage but it turned out that the UK viewing public liked him enough to vote him in as mayor.
