George and Mildred
George and Mildred
George and Mildred is a vintage ITV sitcom that was shown between 1976 and 1979. It follows the fortunes, conflicts and every day life of George and Mildred Roper an ill matched couple locked together in marriage.
Many viewers will be too young to have watched George and Mildred first time round, and these days the attitudes and the lifestyle looks extremely dated. The show was a spin off “Man About The House” a comedy about flat sharing where George was the landlord and Mildred his sexually frustrated wife who chatted up any young men who came her way.

The sitcom George and Mildred takes up the story as the Ropers move from their old house and rented out flat, into an aspirational housing development in more upmarket Hampton Wick West London. Much of the comedy comes from the conflict between Mildred trying to social climb and Brian’s stick in the mud attitudes. Middle class neighbours, the Fourmiles provide much of the class friction – a staple of most good British comedy and the 70s setting and attitudes are interesting and appealing in a nostalgic kind of way.
George and Mildred – played by actors Brian Murphy and Yootha Joyce, ran to five series and was very popular. Unfortunately the plans to make a sixth series was cut short when Yootha Joyce died suddenly due to alcoholism in 1980
