Five Minutes to a Fortune
Five Minutes to a Fortune
Five Minutes to a Fortune on Channel 4 is a game show that piles on the pressure! The contestants try for a chance to win £50,000 held in coin like tokens in a giant hourglass and then have to play as the coins, and their potential winnings, drain away in front of them. Davinia McColl is the host and she oversees proceedings in her usual breathy and over excited style.

Five Minutes to a Fortune is not easy. Contestants play in pairs and the game requires strategy, a cool head and good general knowledge. The games format requires that the contestant pairs must decide on a game player – the contestant who answers the questions and a timekeeper who decides on the subject headings the game player must answer. The timekeeper allots a time frame for each category of answers and the game player must get five correct answers before proceeding.
The question categories are random and include topics such as Celebrity Spotter, Telly Addict, Politically Active and Sports Nut. If the contestant is struggling with a category the timekeeper can chose to switch categories and play an emergency round of questions.
At the end of the rounds, the contestants swap roles for the final game. The money drains away at a rate of £200 a second and the team have five minutes to run through a series of questions and supply the correct answers. Once the final fifth correct answer is given, the hourglass shuts down and the team win what is left of the money. It requires good teamwork and general knowledge to succeed.
Five minutes to a fortune first came onto the TV screens in 2013. There is also a celebrity version of the game, which plays for a £100,000 jackpot for charity.
