EastEnders has been one of the most popular shows on the BBC since the series first started in 1983 and does not seem in danger of losing any of its popularity. It attracts millions of viewers each week, with many catching up with the EastEnders Omnibus on BBC Two each Sunday in order to enjoy all the weeks’ episodes in one bumper edition.
Over the shows 30-year-old history we have seen people grow up on the show and plot line trends that reflect society and social problems as well as some gripping story lines and strong characters.

There is a high turnaround of new characters as people move into the fictional East end area of Walford and leave, but like most real life neighbourhoods a core of long term residents remain.
Strong families feature and when the show began in the 1980s the central families were the Beales and the Fowlers. Adam Woodyatt who plays the character Ian Beale – a teenager in the 1980s is still in the show and is EastEnders only remaining original cast member from these early days. These days the principle family are the Mitchells with matriarch and pub landlady Peggy Mitchell played by Barbara Windsor once well known as a “Carry On “actress.

EastEnders was devised to depict a slice of ordinary life and tries to include all ethnicities as well as all types of people as well as creating storylines around often taboo subjects. Expect a wide range of characters, strong women, cockney wide boys, tarts with hearts, criminals and a cultural diversity that encompasses the new waves of immigration.
In reality, the view of the East End seen on EastEnders is out dated. This fictional view is of a predominantly white working class population living in the East End and according to the campaign for racial equality, reflects the ethnic make up of London in the 1960s rather than the present day. This does not spoil the drama or the enjoyment of the show, which mainly comes from the power of the storylines and the strength of the characters. Expect plots around romance, jealousies, feuds gossip and extra marital affairs as well as some more dramatic incidents and the occasional murder.
