Doctor Martin Ellingham is a brilliant surgeon until he develops a phobia of blood making his job impossible. He leaves his glittering career in London to become a doctor in Portwenn a fictional village in Cornwall. This is the place where he spent his summer holidays as a boy and is still the home of his aunt played by Stephanie Cole. Once there he is irritated to be known by everyone as Doc Martin.
Doc Martin, played by Martin Clunes is rather grumpy and socially inept. He rubs the villagers up the wrong way with his somewhat abrasive bedside manner. The series revolves around Doc Martin’s interaction with the Cornish villagers, his attempts at romance with local schoolteacher and the cases and stories about the people he treats. His aunt is on hand to offer emotional support along the way and his phobia with blood is a constant theme and problem to him. A doctor who is scared of blood! Whatever next.
