Comic Relief Does Glee Club on CBBC is a competition that takes place every two years as part of the Comic Relief charity appeal. Young glee clubs from all over the UK compete in singing competitions over a series of rounds and the three glee club finalists get to perform live on Red Nose Day – the highlight of the charity appeal.
Glee Clubs are a new phenomenon across Britain. The focus is on the fun of singing together and performing dance routines and the aim is to make this inclusive to everyone. The programme runs over a series of heat stages, which are filmed in the studio with the semi finals, and the final performed live in front of an audience. Although Glee clubs are generally believed to be a new American craze, the idea of the Glee Club actually comes from Britain and originates from a singing club in Harrow School in 1787. Glee clubs were popular in the UK until the 1850s but gave way to more formal choirs. Now they are back in fashion and the fact that you don’t have to read music and can perform any song you like rather than material written specifically for choirs, is making them a hit across the country.
