Citizen Khan
Citizen Kane is a BBC One sitcom that follows the ups and downs of a British Asian family. The title Citizen Khan is a pun on the classic Orson Wells film Citizen Kane. However, instead of being an American newspaper publisher as in the film, Mr Khan is a loud mouthed, controlling and self-appointed Muslim community leader based in Birmingham.
The series focuses on Mr Khan and his long-suffering family including Mrs Khan and their two daughters Shazia and Alia, aided by Shazia’s often confused fiancée Amjad
In this episode, Mrs Khan decides to have their first traditional family Christmas sending Mr Khan off to buy a tree. However, Mr Khan has a more “Bah Humbug” attitude and believes that Christmas is just another way to rip people off. And anyway, he believes he has the perfect reason to not celebrate the festivities because “He’s Muslim”! Unsurprisingly the family do not agree with his attitude and are looking forward to celebrating the festive season.
Citizen Khan has attracted some criticism not least for Mr and Mrs Khan’s youngest daughter Alia rushing to put on a hijab when her father was around, but it has also gained many followers and is growing in popularity. It is controversial because of the Muslim connection but essentially this is a traditionally styled BBC One family sitcom that takes a humorous look at families. 46rtg55g
Adil Ray the shows creator said, “What I really want is a white English lady to be watching it and nudge her husband and say 'That's like you, Mr Khan is just like you.'
Although the series is based on a Muslim family, the character of Mr. Khan is someone whom all races will recognise.
