Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe
Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe
Charlie Booker’s Weekly Wipe on BBC 2 is a satirical comedy show that looks at the previous weeks TV and current events. Host Charlie Brooker is a comedian known for his sarcasm and often savage wit and his weekly look at TV does not disappoint.
Charlie Brooker is often controversial, outspoken and just plain mean about people sometimes but this show is genuinely very funny on occasions and often comes across as a harder edged version of Harry Hill’s TV Burp. Brooker looks at some of the odder TV channels such as shopping and gambling often mocking the production style as well as the target audience.
Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe on BBC 2 features a comedy slot from US comedian and satirist Doug Stanhope plus a positive review of a popular TV show shown in the previous week. This is presented by comic characters Barry Shitpeas and Philomena Gunk who usually miss the point of the show they are reviewing with very funny results.
In real life Charlie Brooker is married to Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq so it seems that this abrasive and hard edged satirist does have a softer human side. In fact, Brooker is occasionally praising about certain TV programmes and trends notably reporting that Milkshake a kids station on Channel 5 was great and that he enjoyed the London Olympics. In general he is pretty damning about much of the TV output and if you hold with the idea that sarcasm is the lowest form of wit but that doesn’t make it any less funny, you will enjoy this often thought provoking show.
