Bluestone 42
Bluestone 42
Bluestone 42 is a unique BBC Three comedy drama set in Afghanistan. It follows a British Bomb disposal detachment, with the radio call sign Bluestone 42. carrying out their very dangerous work, interspersed with the social life, camaraderie and gossip which goes on in the camp. Despite the dark setting of the sitcom, there is nothing much to be afraid of in this comedy. It is not harrowing or disturbing and the fact that it was created by the same writing team who gave us Miranda ensures that the characters are good and mainly likable and although unpleasant things happen, we do not actually see them.
The comedy is based around the idea that war is an absurd situation and that people carrying it out are essentially normal people with their ordinary worries, vanities and preoccupations. There is a romantic interest around Captain Nick Medhurst and the padre Mary Greenstock which is a major part of the plot and this provides a central part of the drama.
Bluestone 42, (pronounced four two) brings humour into often desperate situations faced by the unit on a daily basis. There are some long running gags including the fact that it is “too soon” to make jokes about some of the issues such as suicide bombs and dead Americans.

Bluestone 42 has been compared to 70s classic MASH although it does not deliver the real anguish often seen in that show. Despite that, it is extremely watchable and the dark setting makes it interesting and current. It is bringing awareness to the everyday conditions faced by the troops in Afghanistan and the soldiers banter is often extremely funny.
