American Idol is screened on Channel 5. Simon Cowell of X Factor fame was one of the first judged to appear along with singer/dancer Paula Abdul. American Idol is currently presented by Emmy Award winning Ryan Seacrest.
Rather than purely focusing on a prize and the prestige for the winner, the idea is to actually create a star with a recording contract. A previous winner who went on to receive notoriety is Kelly Clarkson.
