Agatha Christie’s Marple on ITV follows the adventures of Miss Jane Marple, an elderly lady living in the quiet little village of St Mary Mead. Miss Jane Marple is one of Agatha Christie's most enduring characters and is the central character in this glossy big production murder mystery series. v510tv
Appearances can be deceiving. Miss Marple has a wise and enquiring mind enabling her to sort out grizzly murders. A place like many on British TV mysteries where an epidemic of murders exists amongst the sherry drinking set. Outwardly, Miss Marple may look like a sweet old lady but inside she has a shrewd view of human nature that can cut through a clever murderous plan and leave the culprits exposed to being caught. The title of this latest series removes the word Miss from Miss Marple, to match the title of the Agatha Christie's Poirot series. The first six episodes were all adaptations of the Miss Marple novels by Agatha Christie. Later episodes were made up from using Agatha Christie plots that did not originally feature the Miss Marple character in them. Miss Marple was originally played by Geraldine McEwen until series three when Julia McKenzie took over the role from the fourth series onwards.
Agatha Christie once wrote, “Sensationalism dies quickly, fear is long-lived.” And this may well be the secret of her long success. Agatha Christie herself considered her books to be good yarns but this has not stopped her fans being outraged by plot changes that have caused the stories to reflect a more modern society.
