Originally titled Emmerdale Farm, this British Soap opera is one of the longest running drama series and is broadcast by the ITV Network.
It takes place in the fictional Yorkshire village of Emmerdale and is based the relationships between the individuals who have made the little village their home.
The families of Emmerdale are central to its story and over the years several of them have moved into the village and played a key role in its defining events.
The series begins with the introduction of the Sugdens. Having recently lost their father who mismanaged the farm, their struggle over the following years to restore the fortunes of the farm and to withstand internal strife form a key part of Emmerdale’s plot in its early years.
Within a decade, a wealthy family, the Tates move to the countryside. They prosper initially before encountering tragedy and bereavement when Chris, their only son commits suicide in the aftermath of an accident which leaves him crippled.
Although the Sugdens and the Tates were strong favourites with viewers, the writers of the show have introduced another group of families whose stories are central to the storyline. These include the Sharmas, who own a business in the village and the Spencers who have come to the countryside in search of a new start.
The inclusion of individuals from various societal backgrounds and the ability to create compelling plotlines around them is one of the key characteristics of the series and has played a significant role in its success.
First aired in 1972, Emmerdale is one of the longest running UK soaps and celebrated its 40th anniversary on 16 October 2012.
It has also received numerous awards throughout the years and has most recently won Best Dramatic Performance at the Inside Soap Awards in 2010 and Spectacular Scene of the Year at the British Soap Awards in 2012.
