Britain’s got Talent is one of the biggest hits on TV and despite whatever anybody says in criticism; it seems that the British public cannot get enough of this show.
Britain’s Got Talent on ITV first aired in 2007 and since this time has become a much discussed institution with no sign that it’s popularity is waning. The show has been commissioned until at least 2016.
BGT (as it is usually abbreviated) was devised by Simon Cowell (the creator of the X Factor). The basic premise of the show is simple. It is a nationwide talent contest open to all however weird or untalented they may be.
In the first rounds – the audition phases, each act appears on stage and runs through their routine unless they are stopped by three of the four judges pressing their buzzers to call a halt to it.
The judges are important personalities and there is plenty of inter judge banter and rivalry. BGT has run through some change to the judging panel but series eight sees Cowell, David Walliams, Alesha Dixon and Amanda Holden occupying the panel with Ant and Dec co hosting behind the scenes with the contestants.
Following the audition phase, the show enters the Callback as the acts are further whittled down to 24 or so acts for the semi finals, which are broadcast live.
This year’s series sees the addition of a golden buzzer, which each judge can use on just one act in order to guarantee it a place in the semi final irrespective of the other judges opinions.

Take away the concept of the buzzers and the auditions; Britain’s got Talent is essentially a variety show. Expect to see magicians, dog acts, singers and dancers as well as the truly unexpected and sometimes truly awful.
Most country’s have their own version of this show, From Afghan’s Got Talent to Vietnam’s Got Talent and all the countries in between. This show is certainly popular wherever the location.
Perhaps it is something to do with seeing ordinary people making fools of themselves, perhaps it is the unexpected moment when suddenly a real talent emerges on the screen, perhaps it is the bear bit atmosphere of the audience. Whatever the reason Britain’s Got Talent makes for some compulsive viewing and should not be missed.
